Mastering Claude for product marketing   [Claude series 1 of 6]

Claude isn’t a chatbot anymore. It’s an ecosystem – and it’s evolving fast.

Most of us started the same way: open Claude, brainstorm some positioning angles, maybe rewrite a paragraph, close the tab. But what Claude has become in the last few months is something fundamentally different.

Once you understand how the pieces fit together, the way you produce work changes: positioning docs, competitive battle cards, launch briefs, sales enablement decks, win/loss analysis. All of it.

This is part 1 of a 6-part series where I’ll break down exactly how to master Claude as a product marketer.

No developer jargon. No “just prompt better” advice. Actual workflows that produce actual deliverables and will help you get set up for success.

But first – you need to understand the landscape. Let’s break it down.

The Claude ecosystem: What is it?

Here’s the problem.

When people say “Claude,” they could mean six different things.

And most PMMs only know about one of them. Let me fix that.

Layer 1: Chat – Claude thinks with you

This is what you know. You type, Claude responds. It’s the conversational interface, the one that feels like ChatGPT. And for plenty of tasks, it’s all you need.

Brainstorming messaging angles for a new feature. Pressure-testing a value prop. Getting a second opinion on whether your positioning is actually differentiated or just… words. Drafting an email to your VP explaining why the launch date needs to move.

Chat is your thinking partner. Fast, flexible, zero setup. But it has a limitation that matters: every conversation starts from scratch. Claude doesn’t remember your product, your market, your competitors. You re-explain everything. Every. Single. Time.

Which is why the next layer exists.

Layer 2: Projects – Claude remembers for you

Projects is still Chat – but with persistent context. You create a workspace, upload your docs (PRD, competitive research, customer interview transcripts, your messaging framework), set custom instructions, and now every conversation within that project has the full picture.

This is where Claude starts to feel less like a tool and more like a junior PMM on your team. (One who’s actually read the brief. 😅)

Working on a launch? Make a project for it. Doing a competitive deep-dive? Project. Refreshing messaging for Q3? Project.

The difference is subtle but powerful. You stop spending the first five minutes of every conversation giving Claude context, and start spending that time on the actual work.

Layer 3: Cowork – Claude works for you

This is where it gets interesting.

Chat gives you text in a window. You copy it, paste it into Google Docs, format it, fix the bits that don’t work. Cowork skips all of that.

Cowork is Claude with hands. It lives on your desktop. It accesses your files. It creates real documents – actual .docx, .pptx, .xlsx files – and saves them to your folder. It can control your browser. It takes actions on your behalf.

Ask Cowork to build a competitive battle card and you come back to a finished Word doc in your folder. Ask it to extract insights from 20 customer call transcripts and you get a structured analysis. Not text in a chat window. A file. On your computer. Ready to share.

For PMMs, this is where Claude stops being a brainstorming partner and starts being a production engine.

Layer 4: Skills – Claude repeats for you

Without skills, every time you ask Claude to do something, you’re starting from a blank prompt. You describe what you want, how to structure it, what format to use, which methodology to follow. Every. Time.

A skill is a reusable playbook. A set of instructions Claude follows for a specific type of task – like training a team member once, then they execute that process consistently forever.

The power is that skills work everywhere. Install a competitive battle card skill and it works whether you’re in Chat brainstorming positioning, in Cowork producing a finished doc, or in Code building an automated competitive tracking system. Same skill, different surface, different level of output.

For PMMs, this is where Claude starts to compound. Build skills for the work you do repeatedly: battle cards that always follow your template.

Launch briefs that always hit the right sections. Messaging frameworks that follow April Dunford’s methodology every time.

Once a skill exists, you don’t re-explain. You just say “run it.”

Layer 5: Connectors – Claude connects for you

Everything I’ve described so far happens inside Claude. But your actual work lives elsewhere: in Slack, Gmail, HubSpot, Google Calendar, your CRM.

Connectors plug Claude directly into those tools. It can read your Slack channels. Pull data from HubSpot. Draft responses in Gmail. Check your calendar. The walls between “AI tool” and “work tools” disappear.

For PMMs, this means Claude can pull competitive chatter from your sales Slack channel, cross-reference it with your CRM data, and flag patterns – without you manually copying anything anywhere. And like Skills, Connectors work across all of Claude’s surfaces. Connect Slack once, it’s available everywhere.

Layer 6: Code – Claude builds for you

Before you skip this one, Claude Code is not just for engineers.

Code is Claude’s most powerful surface. It runs in your terminal, has full workspace access, and can connect systems, build prototypes, and automate complex workflows. Where Cowork produces documents, Code produces systems.

Want to turn a PRD into a working interactive prototype? Code. Want to build an internal competitive tracking dashboard? Code. Want to create an automation that monitors competitor pricing pages daily and alerts you when something changes? Code.

Most PMMs won’t need this on day one. But knowing it exists – and that the path from Cowork to Code is surprisingly short – changes how you think about what’s possible.
