Core SEO metrics to understand

Below are some of the most important metrics that SEO specialists need to understand. If you see extreme spikes or anomalies in any of these metrics, consider it a signal to explore what’s going on.

Clicks The number of times users clicked on your website in search results. Reflects user engagement and how compelling your result is in the SERP. Changes may signal SERP shifts (e.g., AI Overviews), seasonality, increased or decreased competition or rank changes.
Click-through rate (CTR) The percentage of impressions that result in clicks. Helps evaluate how effectively your result attracts users compared to competitors. Low CTR may indicate poor titles or descriptions, more compelling competitor listings, new SERP features that push clicks down, or irrelevant query matching.
Average position The average ranking your URLs hold across the queries they appear for. Shows overall visibility and ranking health across your keyword portfolio. Drops may come from ranking volatility, new SERP features, additional keywords entering your dataset, or competitor activity.

Traffic sources and user behavior

However, in some cases (e.g., when users quickly find a phone number), this is normal.
Engagement rate (GA4) The reverse of bounce rate: sessions that meet Google Analytics 4’s (GA4’s) engaged session criteria (e.g., >10 seconds, conversion event, or ≥ two page views). Replaces bounce rate as a more accurate signal of meaningful engagement. Drops can signal UX issues, traffic quality changes, or misfiring engagement events. Spikes may reflect new event setups or mislabeled conversions.
Pages per session The average number of pages a user views in a single session. Indicates how deeply users explore your content. Low numbers suggest weak internal linking, irrelevant traffic, or user experience (UX) issues.
Average session duration The average time users spend on your site per session. Reflects engagement quality and content relevance. Drops may indicate poor content alignment, slow-loading pages that cause abandonment, or tracking issues.

Conversion data

Assisted conversions Conversions where organic search played a contributing role in the customer journey. Demonstrates SEO’s impact beyond last-click conversions. Drops may indicate top-of-funnel traffic loss, misaligned audiences built from SEO efforts, or attribution changes. Spikes may reflect model updates or increased discovery.

How to read an SEO report and interpret its data

When reviewing an SEO report, start with the metrics that matter most: conversion data and revenue generated from SEO. 

Impressions, clicks, and rankings are helpful diagnostic signals, but they’re not the end goal. If conversions are stable or increasing, there’s rarely a reason to panic — even if visibility metrics dip.

Tips for reading an SEO report:

  • Establish a baseline for normal behavior. Before you can identify anomalies, you need to know what typical site performance looks like. Every business has its own patterns, traffic rhythms, and conversion cycles.
  • Check whether charts and tables show an increase, a decrease, or a flat line. Patterns in the data show whether trends are moving in the right (or wrong) direction. But avoid jumping to conclusions. Once you find an anomaly, review the data to build a story of what happened — multiple things may be occurring at once.
  • Segment data to pinpoint where changes occur. Break down data to get closer to the source of the issue. You might filter by page or query in GSC and by device or location in GA4. An anomaly that appears sitewide may be isolated to a handful of URLs, a group of users, or a specific page.
  • Use historical data to map typical ranges and seasonal patterns. Compare these charts month-on-month (MoM) and year-on-year (YoY) to determine whether these changes are normal or abnormal.
  • Talk to teams about what’s happening that might influence data. For example, exhibiting at a conference or securing a PR feature could influence brand searches. A product that goes viral on social media may also increase search volume.
  • Contextualize performance against competitors. Compare competitor data by monitoring SERPs or using a tool like Semrush’s Organic Research. If competitors experienced the same trend, you may find that it’s an industry-wide shift rather than a site-specific problem.


What are SEO data anomalies? 

SEO data anomalies are unusual patterns in search engine optimization metrics like traffic, rankings, and user behavior that deviate significantly from the expected norm. 

Not all anomalies are negative. Some are positive, and others are false alarms. But you should investigate all to determine if they indicate potential problems.

Here’s an example of a positive anomaly in SEO analytics:

The website’s traffic spiked toward the end of the reporting period. But after analyzing clicks and queries, the SEO analyst found that all clicks were from branded searches that coincided with a major industry event where the business was exhibiting.

It’s important not to ignore anomalies that show an upward trend. Not all are positive.

For example, upward trends in GSC may not be particularly helpful to your SEO strategy if the traffic is from an audience you don’t serve or if the content is driving clicks in a country where you can’t ship a product. You can start by identifying where the traffic is coming from and which keyword is driving clicks to determine whether the spike is positive, neutral, or negative. 

Similarly, high volumes of referral or direct traffic in Google Analytics may indicate spam or bot activity inflating your metrics. If you notice an unexpected spike from these sources, it’s always worth investigating whether the traffic is legitimate or the result of automated visits.

Here’s an example of a negative anomaly in SEO analytics:

The drop near the end of the reporting period could be described as a “cliff drop,” as it appears to be pretty severe. On further inspection, this anomaly was a red flag resulting from a technical issue.

An error occurred across pages, and key pages were cached with the error. Pages began dropping from the index. In response, the team implemented a plan to restore the website’s pre-technical issue rankings.

Tools and methods for detecting SEO data issues

Detecting SEO data issues doesn’t have to be a manual task each month. Some tools can help you expedite the process and alert you to potential issues before any damage occurs.

Manual analysis

Manual analysis involves reviewing raw SEO data using charts, tables, and patterns to understand what’s happening. It’s surprising what you can see by simply looking at a graph or making a comparison from one period to another.

Here’s what GSC looks like comparing six months of data to the six months previous:

Here, it’s easy to see that clicks and impressions are up. The site is performing well. 

Sometimes manual analysis is enough. This is true for smaller sites with few issues or in cases where limited budgets don’t allow for dedicated SEO analytics tools.



Data segmentation

Segmentation is critical for diagnosing SEO anomalies because it helps you isolate problems. 

Issues that appear to affect the entire site are often isolated to specific pages, devices, locations, or keyword types.

Examples of segmentation include:

  • Page-level: Is the issue affecting all pages or only a few URLs?
  • Device level: Is the drop happening only on mobile or only on desktop?
  • Location level: Are users in one region seeing different results?
  • Page type or category: Are blog pages declining, but product pages stable?

Segmenting data helps uncover missed stories. 

Country filters

A good starting point is filtering by country. If you’re a company serving only the United States, then traffic from the rest of the world doesn’t matter for your SEO.

When you’ve optimized a site, you don’t get complete control over where it’s indexed. This means if you don’t serve customers worldwide, some traffic may be irrelevant.

You can’t stop these customers from finding your site. But you can remove the data you don’t need in GSC so you can focus on what matters.

SERP features

Featured snippets, AI Overviews, Local Packs, shopping results, and image carousels all affect organic impressions, clicks, and CTR differently.

For example, local businesses often rank in both organic results and local pack features. The metrics are confusing because SEO tools track these separately, even though users see them as a single integrated experience.

Your listing might appear at position 11 in GSC. This might seem like a negative result if you just look at the data.

But a deeper analysis of the SERP features might show that position 11 is actually a knowledge panel, which is more valuable and takes more space in the SERPs.

Mobile vs. desktop

SERP layouts differ dramatically between devices. AI Overviews might dominate the desktop view, while mobile might show truncated versions.

Local packs and shopping results also appear differently on different devices. If you’re looking closely at CTR, segment by device to get context for what’s going on and where.

Keyword intent

Informational queries face more AI competition than commercial or navigational searches do.

For example, when you target the informational query “how to optimize SEO,” you compete against direct AI answers. A query like “best SEO tools in {{year}}” still relies on human comparison. It’s more likely to earn a click because searchers are likely digging a bit deeper into their research.

Segment content by its intent. Some content might not be getting clicks, but it might still be winning in visibility-first SEO. If the content is cited in AI Overviews, then your site is listed in the highest possible place in SERPs.

The takeaway: Clicks aren’t always the right metric to judge a piece of content. In an AI-assisted search landscape, where and how your brand shows up is just as important as traditional traffic. Visibility creates trust, reinforces expertise, and influences decisions long before the click happens.

Branded vs. non-branded

Non-branded searches face more competition from alternative result formats. Listings for these searches can include a range of SERP features, such as AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask, and rich results like review stars and prices. Plus, non-branded searches can bring a range of competitors into the listings. 

Branded searches generally have high click volume, impressions, CTR, and average position because people searching for them are looking for you and are therefore likely to click your listing.

In other words, branded search data can make a site’s SEO performance look really good. Filter out the brand to get a complete view of how SEO is performing.

While increased branded searches are a positive result, it’s important to understand what drives them. SEO doesn’t usually increase branded searches dramatically, unless you’ve created a new branded landing page like “{{brand}} reviews” or “{{brand}} discounts.”

Automated anomaly detection

Automated anomaly detection uses machine learning-powered tools and platform insights to flag unusual patterns in your data without requiring constant manual monitoring.

Tools like Go-Insights, Google Looker Studio, or custom dashboards have machine-learning-driven alerts to analyze your metrics in real time and notify you when something deviates from expected behavior. 

These tools can detect spikes, drops, or shifts faster than manual review and can surface issues you might miss, especially in large datasets. 

Once flagged, you can dig deeper into issues by segmenting the data and confirming whether the anomaly is meaningful or a false alarm.

Technical SEO tools

SEO platforms like Semrush can warn you about technical issues fast, potentially before they’ve caused impact and created anomalies in your SEO data.

The Site Audit tool crawls your website the same way a search engine would. It flags issues such as broken links, redirect loops, indexing issues, slow-loading pages, and Core Web Vitals warnings. It categorizes each issue by severity, helping you prioritize what to fix first.

One of the key advantages of tools like this is the automation. 

You can schedule recurring site audits and have the findings automatically emailed to you. Or cut out the middleman and have the most serious issues sent directly to developers. 

If you catch technical problems early and notify the right people instantly, you’ll reduce the risk of SEO issues going unnoticed and causing sudden performance drops later. Even if you address the issue after a drop occurs, at least you’ll already have the cause on your radar. You can include these insights in your reporting and use them as an opportunity to showcase your reactive work to SEO stakeholders.

Common variables that can create SEO anomalies

Many variables can create SEO anomalies, so it’s always worth reviewing this checklist. When something like seasonality or an easy-to-fix tech issue resolves an anomaly, you won’t have to dedicate resources to additional exploration.

Seasonality

Seasonality variables refer to predictable, recurring fluctuations in search behavior or website performance based on time of year, holidays, or cyclical consumer demand.

Seasonal shifts in SEO can cause natural fluctuations in all metrics, but they’re unrelated to SEO performance. These changes often appear as anomalies in analytics because they can be sudden and consistent with short-term trends.

Christmas is a good example. Search terms containing Christmas start to rise from the middle to the end of September, peak in December, and drop just as fast once the season is over. 

B2C ecommerce brands can expect to see similar spikes in their content each year, especially for popular gift products. While local businesses like a lawn care service may see a decline this time of year.

So, what should you do about seasonal variables? Use YoY comparisons (not just MoM) to identify seasonal patterns. Build seasonal baselines to understand what normal looks like. This way, you can determine whether this year’s efforts were better than last.

Use seasonal data to help create your annual plan. For example, if product sales typically surge ahead of the Christmas peak, make sure product pages are optimized and items are in stock before the spike.

Technical issues

Technical issues are errors in your site’s code or problems that interfere with how users and search engines access, crawl, or interact with your website.

Examples of technical issues include:

  • Page redirects
  • 404 errors
  • Broken online checkout process (e.g., can’t take payment, broken add-to-cart buttons, etc.)
  • Deindexing issues

Technical problems can cause sudden drops in traffic, rankings, conversions, or engagement because they disrupt the user experience or prevent search engines from properly crawling and indexing your site. For example, if a high-traffic revenue-driving page suddenly returns a 404 error, it will instantly lose traffic and conversions.

What to do about technical issues:

Technical errors that impact user experience (UX) or crawling and indexing must be resolved immediately.

When resolving technical errors, start by identifying and prioritizing errors. Prioritize issues that impact:

  • User experience, such as extremely slow page load times
  • Conversions, such as a broken form submit button
  • Crawlability, such as thousands of indexed parameter URLs causing index bloat
  • Broken pages, such as pages showing status code 404
  • Failed transactions, such as a broken checkout

Once you’ve identified the issue, work with developers or your platform provider to fix the root cause. Then, validate the fixes by testing affected pages and monitoring performance and indexing status.

SERP changes

SERP changes refer to shifts in how Google displays search results — by adding or removing SERP features like featured snippets, AI Overviews, Local Packs, shopping results, and image carousels. 

These changes affect metrics like impressions, clicks, and CTR. As a result, they can reduce conversions and revenue — particularly when AI Overviews appear, as they answer questions in full so users don’t have to click through to the site for more information.

It can be tricky to spot the influence of SERP changes on SEO metrics.

The challenge is that traditional ranking tools report your position but don’t show how many SERP features sit above your result. This can make a stable ranking look like a performance drop.

For example, a traditional listing that ranks first will continue to rank first after an AI Overview has appeared, removing the need for users to click.

Here’s what to do about SERP features influencing SEO analytics: 

Review affected keywords directly in the SERP to understand which features are now appearing above or around your result. Track SERP feature ownership and optimize content for formats that still drive clicks. And adjust expectations, especially for informational queries increasingly answered by AI Overviews.

Algorithm updates

Algorithm updates are changes to how search engines evaluate, rank, and surface content.

Google makes frequent changes to its search algorithms, which generally fall into two categories: major Core Updates and smaller, more frequent minor updates.

Core Updates are broad changes that can impact many websites at once and are typically confirmed by Google. Minor updates are ongoing adjustments that refine how Google evaluates and ranks content. We don’t get any warnings about minor algorithm updates.

Both types of updates can cause sudden shifts in rankings, impressions, and traffic as Google reassesses site quality, relevance, or authority. 

What to do about Core Updates:

Check for confirmed update announcements and review which pages or categories were most affected. Then, assess content quality, E-E-A-T signals, and technical health across your site. Generally, with algorithm updates, your focus needs to be on long-term improvements rather than quick fixes.

Entity confusion

Entity confusion occurs when search engines mix up your business with another that has a similar name, location, or identity signals. This is becoming more common with AI Overviews and AI search.

The various complaints reference damage to brand reputation, negative competitor reviews surfacing for the wrong brand, incorrect summaries, and incorrect pictures ranking.

When Google can’t clearly distinguish between entities, it may show a competitor’s listings or an irrelevant listing instead of yours. This can lead to sudden drops in impressions, clicks, and branded visibility.

What to do about entity confusion:

Strengthen your entity signals. Ensure consistent name, address, phone (NAP) data, optimize your about and contact pages, build strong branded mentions, and claim or clean up local listings. Add clear contextual cues (industry, services, location) across key pages (those that generate revenue) to help Google differentiate your brand.



Competitor activity

Competitor activity refers to changes in other websites’ content, authority, or strategy that can influence your own SEO performance. 

Your performance mainly depends on what you do. But what competitors do also matters.

When a competitor improves their content or gains backlinks, your traffic or rankings may drop — even if nothing on your site has changed.

Say your site’s rankings or traffic dropped by 20% and all competitor sites also dropped by the same percentage. It’s probably due to an algorithm update or something similar.

But if competitors’ sites improved or remained stable, then the issue is site-specific rather than industry-wide.

What to do about competitors:

Benchmark metrics against competitors using tools like Site Audit to monitor site health or Organic Research to see how competitor content is performing. Review competitor content, SERP features, and backlink gains. Look for patterns across the industry to determine whether the anomaly is due to competitive pressure or to something affecting the entire market.

Questions to ask about your SEO data

Not all anomalies indicate that your SEO has tanked. Before you panic about an anomaly in your data, pause.

Anomalies can occur due to factors beyond your control, such as an algorithm update, AI Overviews appearing in search results, or natural seasonal trends.

But anomalies can also signal issues like tracking problems.

Use the questions below as a checklist to determine whether you’re dealing with a problem that needs to be addressed or just normal volatility.

  • Is this a seasonal or expected change? Consider the time of the year. Are there any holidays or events that could impact search? Review the YoY data and check whether anomalies appeared in previous years around the same time.
  • Is this a tracking or data collection issue? Look for signs of common tracking issues, such as a new cookie policy that prevents GA4 from tracking data, analytics tags failing to fire, multiple tags firing (which causes data to be tracked two or more times), or bugs in analytics tools.
  • Are there external factors? Some things are out of your control. Algorithm updates can cause anomalies as Google changes which websites deserve top ranks or updates SERP features, which can result in pages that once received thousands of clicks suddenly getting zero clicks. Or, competitors might be working on a strategy that puts their site ahead of yours in the SERP, causing your site to lose backlinks.
  • Is this a one-off or a sustained trend? A one-off issue that influences search doesn’t usually require action. But sustained trends like AI Overviews may require a new strategic direction. You need to know whether anomalies are likely to occur and become the norm, so you can develop an action plan if required.

Common false alarms and their explanations

When analyzing SEO analytics and reviewing anomalies, there are a few common false alarms. Many anomalies have harmless (or even positive) explanations.

Here are five of them:

1. Clicks have dropped

Clicks may fall even when rankings haven’t changed.

Why: In modern SEO, AI Overviews and other SERP features eliminate the need for searchers to click for answers to informational queries. This means no one is getting the click anymore — not just you. This is a SERP behavior change, not an SEO failure.

2. Impressions have dropped

Impressions declining doesn’t always mean your visibility has worsened.

Why: SERP layouts change. If your content previously appeared in a featured snippet and Google replaces it with an AI Overview you’re not included in, impressions naturally drop because your result is shown less often.

It could also be that you’ve lost impressions because the page once ranked for irrelevant keywords. Driving a more relevant audience to the page is more important.

3. Average position or ranking has dropped

A lower average position can actually reflect an improved SERP presence.

Why: If Google awards your brand a Knowledge Panel, it often appears around position 11 in GSC on desktop. This lowers your average position, even though you now have a more prominent and valuable result.

It’s likely that clicks would increase while average position decreases. However, clicks are a more important metric.

4. Conversions have increased

A sudden spike in conversions isn’t always good news.

Why: Sometimes thank you pages, confirmation pages, or order completion URLs get indexed accidentally. When every visit counts as a conversion in analytics, this artificially inflates conversion numbers and needs to be corrected.

5. Bounce rate has increased

A higher bounce rate doesn’t always indicate low engagement.

Why: If users find what they need instantly (such as a phone number or opening hours), they may leave immediately. Yet they still had a successful visit. When key actions occur before another pageview or event fires, a high bounce rate isn’t a problem.
