The name rebeccapurple represents a sad story in the web development community. The color (#663399) was added to the CSS color palette in 2014 as a tribute to Rebecca Meyer, the six-year-old daughter of renowned web developer Eric Meyer, who tragically passed away from brain cancer.
During her short life, Rebecca had a love for purple, and after her passing, the idea to immortalize her in CSS gained popularity in the web community. It began as a suggestion on social media and quickly gained traction, leading to its formal adoption in the CSS Color Module Level 4. As Eric Meyer himself expressed, it was a bitter-sweet gesture, one that ensured Rebecca’s memory would be interwoven with the web’s foundation.
